Release of around 100 people from detention centres

About 100 people were released from detention centres across Australia a few days before Christmas. Advocates believe that the release came after the federal government lost a "significant" Federal Court case on 22 December, Ian Rintoul, a spokesperson from the Refugee Action Coalition told SBS News.

Death of Iraqi refugee at Villawood detention centre

An immigration detainee from Iraq has died in a suspected suicide at Villawood detention centre. Advocates said that the 28-year-old refugee was held at the detention centre for the past five years. The Department of Home Affairs confirmed the death of the man on Sunday, 29 January.
