110 million forced displacements globally

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is calling for concerted action as forced displacements hit a new record of nearly 110 million.

Online prayer service for Refugee Week 2023

The Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office organised an online prayer service for Refugee Week 2023, with the theme "Finding Freedom."

The event had 115 registered participants and aimed to pray for those who have sought a new life by fleeing their homes.

The Director of the Catholic Immigration Office for Sydney Archdiocese, Kylie Cullen, emphasised the importance of freedom and the risks many face to find it.

The online gathering included scripture readings, prayers, and a performance by the Ugandan and Nigerian community in Sydney.

Bishop Karol Kulczycki SDS spoke about journeying together as a church and caring for refugees, highlighting that love does not favour separation.

He emphasised the unity achieved through baptism in Christ, stating that there are no refugees or migrants in God's house.

He encouraged attendees to be attentive to others in their parish and recognise them as brothers and sisters.

The service also featured Peter Arndt, Director of the Office for Justice, Ecology and Peace, who shared a resource for World Refugee Day, including messages from Pope Francis and information on Australia's approach to asylum seekers and refugees, along with ways for people to get involved.
