Migrant and Refugee Kit 2023 - Poster

The poster for the Migrant and Refugee Kit 2023 is now available for download.

The complete Migrant and Refugee Kit 2023 will be available for download on 15 August 2023. This will include stories from local communities, reflections, primary and secondary schools’ prayer rituals and prayers of the faithful to be used for the 109th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sunday, 24 September 2023.

The Use of Hotels as Alternative Places of Detention

The Australian Human Rights Commission conducts ongoing monitoring of conditions in detention to ensure that Australia’s immigration detention system complies with our obligations under international human rights law.

The immigration authorities use hotels as Alternative Places of Detention (APOD) instead of immigration detention centres.

In 2022, the Commission conducted inspections, interviews and consultations to monitor the human rights of people detained in hotel APODs in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Refugees off PNG and Nauru

The Office for Justice, Ecology and Peace released an article which discusses the Catholic Church's call to end the detention of refugees on Manus Island and Nauru. It highlights concerns about the harmful effects of prolonged detention on mental health and emphasises the need for compassion and just treatment of refugees. The Church urges the Australian government to prioritise humane solutions for those seeking refuge.
